Melanie Sykes says Gregg Wallace comment made her quit TV

Former TV stalwart Melanie Sykes has revealed the one comment that caused her to become absent from the small screen.

The presenter was renowned for her spells as a co-host on a variety of shows including Today with Des and Mel and Let’s Do Lunch, with Gino D’Acampo.

However, her regular TV appearances have dried up considerably since she competed on Celebrity Masterchef in 2021, which is when one comment reportedly made Melanie turn her back on TV for good.

The 52-year-old has stated she has no interest in chasing a mainstream TV career following her stint on the cooking contest, going as far as vowing to never appear on a TV screen again after her experience on the show.

Sykes revealed she felt as though she was “thrown under a bus”.

She has been a mainstay on the small screen for decades, with her presenting career beginning with Sky One’s Real TV UK series in the mid-90s, which led to appearances on programmes including The Big Breakfast and The Paul O’Grady Show.

Melanie also competed on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! And The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off.

The Mirror reports that, she recounts in her autobiography an encounter with Masterchef judge Gregg Wallace which proved to be the catalyst behind her exit from TV.

Sykes says that Wallace told her that her appearance on the cooking competition would help boost her career, and “would do a lot for you”.

Despite the words being well intended, Mel wrote that her appearance on the show made her “decide to end my television career once and for all”.

She told The Guardian: “I will no longer be tap-dancing for corporations who couldn’t give two boots about my wellbeing”

“Mainstream TV just doesn’t interest me.”
