‘Was I watching a replay!?’: Ally McCoist is left baffled as he reveals he watched a repeat of last weekend’s Saudi Grand Prix without realising… before compounding his Monday morning misery by spilling coffee over himself!

When Ally McCoist sat down to enjoy some Formula One action over the weekend, little did he know the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix he assumed was live had already been and gone.

One week after Sergio Perez prevailed in Jeddah, McCoist believed he was watching the Red Bull star come out on top as it happened – only to discover on Monday morning that it was in fact a replay.

In a hilarious moment on talkSPORT’s breakfast show, the Rangers legend asked host Laura Woods which F1 expert they would be speaking to fresh from what he thought was the weekend’s race.

‘It’s becoming a non-event the Grand Prix isn’t it,’ he said.

McCoist then appeared to be told by someone off camera that there was no F1 Grand Prix over the weekend, to which he replied: ‘It was Saudi Arabia at the weekend. Was I watching a replay?’

Before bursting into laughter, Woods told the bemused pundit that the Saudi showpiece actually took place the weekend before.

‘Was it? Was I watching a replay?’ McCoist asked.

‘Aye, I swear to god I was! I thought to myself: “This is brilliant, Perez has won two in a row!”

‘In my defence I didn’t watch it all, I watched about 25 minutes because I thought to myself “this is boring, it’s gonna be another one-two [with Perez and Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen finishing first and second].”‘

And to top off McCoist’s nightmare morning, Woods also shared footage on Instagram of her talkSPORT colleague soaked in coffee after spilling his latte down his lap. A true Monday to forget.

Fans were left in stitches at his F1 gaffe over the weekend, with one writing on Twitter: ‘Love Ally, he cracks me up’.

Another put: ‘Never change Ally.’

A third commented: ‘What a legend’.

While one joked: ‘Stick to football I think’.

Perez continued Red Bull’s blistering start to the 2023 season in Saudi, pipping team-mate Verstappen to top spot in a reverse of the season-opening Bahrain GP.

The F1 schedule resumes this weekend as Perez and Co look to maintain their dominance out in Australia.
