Drivers urged to prepare for sun glare and more people on roads as daylight savings begins

With days getting longer and warmer, drivers will face a number of new challenges. These may include more congestion due to increased traffic and poor visibility due to sun glare. With that in mind, experts at Driver Hire Training have shared three tips on how motorists can stay safe on the roads.

Avoiding drowsy driving

Motorists may feel slightly more tired today and in the next few days as they adjust to the time difference.

With one hour less sleep, experts recommend that motorists take extra care and remain vigilant to avoid drowsiness.

Richard Owen-Hughes, Marketing Director at Driver Hire, said: “Ensuring you’re getting enough rest is vital when driving, especially in the morning when it’s common to feel more lethargic.”

Drivers are also warned that operating a vehicle while feeling drowsy could be considered careless driving.

This offence could land drivers with a fixed penalty notice of £100 and three penalty points on their driving license.

The experts added that if the case is considered severe and is taken to court, the punishment could increase to a £5,000 fine, nine penalty points, and even a disqualification.

Mr Owen-Hughes advised drivers not to take any chances and get plenty of sleep and rest in the next few days.

Preparing for more people on the road

With warmer and longer days throughout spring and summer, more people will be making leisurely journeys.

Experts are also warning that the number of pedestrians and cyclists is likely to increase meaning that drivers should be much more vigilant.

Mr Owen-Hughes said: “Regardless of the time of year, making sure you are vigilant and following best practice is extremely important.

“Whilst many people will not even consider the clocks changing to affect something like their driving, it really can make a difference.”
