Wout Weghorst hits back at his critics who claimed he 'wasn't good enough' for Man United

Wout Weghorst HITS BACK at critics after Paul Scholes claimed he ‘wasn’t good enough’ for Man United… as the striker insists his regular gametime shows he IS ‘doing a good job for the team’

  • Wout Weghorst has been an ever-present for Man United since joining in January
  • However, he has been criticised in some quarters for a lack of goals and assists
  • The Dutch forward claimed he was a big part of the success of Erik ten Hag’s side

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has hit back at his critics and claimed he is ‘doing a good job for the team’.

The Dutch forward moved to Erik ten Hag’s side on loan from Burnley in January after having a positive loan spell during the first half of the campaign at Besiktas – where he scored nine goals in 18 games – cut short.

He has since been a key part of a rejuvenated United side under his fellow countryman, starting 18 out of the 18 games he has been available for in all competitions.

But he has scored just two goals and is yet to find the net in eight Premier League matches, which has led to criticism that he is not good enough for the club from the likes of Paul Scholes and Richard Keys.

Weghorst fought back at his detractors though and claimed the fact Ten Hag has made him a regular member of his starting XI is evidence he is more than capable of playing for United.

‘That’s a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me,’ he said. ‘It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team.

‘That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies. We have one now.

‘We have two more (trophies) to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League.

‘So it just shows me that I am being part of it.’

Weghorst’s supporters have praised him for his contribution to the team as a whole, with the forward often leading United’s press from the front and creating space for other attackers like Marcus Rashford. He has also been deployed as a number 10 by Ten Hag.

But his detractors – including Scholes – had used this off-the-ball work as a stick to beat him with.

Scholes recently told Premier League Productions: ‘Weghorst is in the team to be a defender, really.

‘You’re talking about a Manchester United No 10 or a centre-forward, he’s in the team to be defensive.

‘He’s the one who runs about and rats about and everybody likes playing with him because he does that.

‘But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for Man United… it’s not there.’

Weghorst is currently on international duty with Holland, with Ronald Koeman’s side facing Euro 2024 qualifying games against France and Gibraltar over the next week.

He will then return to Old Trafford and the Red Devils are back in action with a crunch clash away to Newcastle on April 2.
