Travel enthusiast shares how to get upgraded on a flight – but some think it's 'selfish'

A TikTok creator who goes by the name of Call Me Loop (@callmeloop) shared a simple way passengers can get upgraded on a flight using just a box of chocolates.

Flying can be pretty uncomfortable, especially if you’re travelling far away on a long-haul flight.

Economy seating is pretty basic and does not quite promise the same luxury and comfort as Business or First Class.

Call Me Loop claimed that flyers can get a free upgrade by giving the “cabin head person” – chief purser – a box of chocolates.

She revealed that this trick was told to her by her friend who had heard it from the head of cabins.

Speaking about her friend, she said: “He tried it on a plane by himself and it worked for him.”

What she recommended was to purchase a box of chocolates and hand them to the purser “when you’re in the air so everything’s calmed down a bit”.

She told flyers to pair this confectionary treat with a sweet thank you for all the hard work the cabin crew does.

It’s important to not mention anything about an upgrade, just give the gift and express appreciation.

This worked for her friend who was moved into First Class just 10 minutes later with the words “please come with us, your seat is actually ready now”.

But Call Me Loop added a caveat, explaining that this might not work for everyone – and did not work for her and someone she was travelling with.

Indeed, she thinks this tip works for “sexy solo travellers only”, so it’s a good one to try sans travel companion.

The TikTok user admitted she tried to do this with an £11.50 box of Maltesers but to no avail, simply receiving two water bottles as a thank you.

The video has amassed a whopping 65,000 likes so far and has been shared over 2,000 times.

More than 4,000 users have saved the video ahead of their next solo travel escapade.

TikTok users flocked to the comments, with some of them saying the hack works and others branding it “selfish”.

@buttchugboba said: “As a flight attendant I ALWAYS hook up passengers that bring gifts, whether it’s a better seat or free drink/snack.”

@the11th_flight_attendant added: “This used to be a good secret, but now everyone with [TikTok] thinks they can get an upgrade for the price of a bag of chocolate.”

@mayessie commented: “I done this, didn’t get an upgrade but got treated like royalty!”.

@sgh167 disagreed: “Why do people think buying eleven quid’s worth of chocolates is gonna get them an upgrader worth thousands on some routes?”

@Birchtree added: “How strange that you want to tell the world about how incredibly selfish you are.”

@annfanta said: “Nah, you can’t expect anything from it. You have to do it from the kindness of your heard.”
