Motorists in a seaside town have been left baffled as the council replaced wiggly road markings and a white circle which looks like ‘alien landing pad’ with a yellow path that ‘looks like something out of The Wizard of Oz’.
North Somerset Council sparked anger earlier this year in the town of Clevedon when it painted wiggly lines on the historic Victorian seafront as part of redevelopment works.
It then caused more confusion by painting what appeared to be the start of a roundabout – dabbled an ‘alien landing pad’ by locals.
But now people in Clevedon say last night, workers removed the bendy lines and roundabout – and installed a new bright pathway.
Residents said the new yellow pathway looks ‘like something out of The Wizard Of Oz’.

Furious residents took to social media this morning to share their distaste for the road marks.
One wrote: ‘Seems like NSC are at it again at night once again taking away lines and removing the roundabout on the seafront. How much is this costing us? Why?
‘For eight hours overnight, contractors worked to paint new markings – thick white lines separating the cycle lane from the road.’
One person added: ‘Well have woken up to this (although with 8 hours of noise it was difficult to sleep!) this is just one nights work from the ‘yellow contractors’ three more to go!!!
‘It looks horrendous. When we tried to get permission for a roof window in the back of our house, no sorry it’s a conservation area!!!!!!!! I rest my case.’
Another local said: ‘I can only assume that the white bits across the road are zebra crossings, waiting for the black lines to be painted on them. Goodness knows what the long white lines are for.’
One other wrote: ‘Completely mental!’

The council said the aim of the road markings was to make the road feel narrower and slow down traffic
A North Somerset Council spokesperson said: ‘The new surface road treatment in Clevedon is designed to make the area safer by helping slow traffic down.
‘We expect many more visitors to come to Clevedon after the Pier to Pier Way opens later this year, which will bring more walkers and cyclists to the area.
‘These works have made the area safer for all and also supports our commitment to provide sustainable travel routes across the area.
‘The scheme has provided seven new crossing points, improved pedestrian and cycle user safety and will bring additional parking to the area.
‘The new buff coloured surface marks new pedestrian crossings, the space between car parking and the cycle lane as well as on the roundabout.

‘The material was chosen in consultation with conservation officers and is frequently used in historic environments around the UK, for example Oxford, Bath and London.’
North Somerset Council said the wiggly lines were part of a new design aimed at making the road feel narrower and slowing down traffic.
They were also implemented as part of plans to introduce a new beach-front cycle path along the seaside road.
The road scheme has seen a 400 metre segregated cycle lane installed to remove cyclists from the prom.
The plan is to remove traffic from the town’s seafront which features several brightly coloured homes.
The new cycleway will form part of the ‘Pier to Pier’ link between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon, with the road next to it also being made one way.
