Man with conviction for sex with horse caught crouching behind another while on licence

A man was caught crouching behind a horse after previously admitting penetrating an animal. The man, who said he had “an unusual habit” was arrested after sneaking into a stable with the intent to commit a sexual offence.

Lancashire police responded to a call on May 16 2022 at 12:40 am from a Hapton stable owner claiming they had been alerted by a sensor and found a man in the stables.

LancashireLive reported that the owner discovered 42-year-old Shane Taylor-Waters “crouched behind a horse”.

When he was arrested on suspicion of burglary, he reportedly told police: “I’m in an unstable situation. I’ve tried getting medication for it. I’m on licence. I have an unusual habit.”

When Taylor-Waters was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, he said: “I thought about doing it, then thought better.” He added: “I went there with the intention of doing it. I went in the stable and sat there for five minutes and didn’t do anything. Then the man came out and caught me.”

Taylor-Waters, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and was jailed for 12 months when he appeared at Burnley Crown Court earlier this week.

DC Leigh Palfreeman of Burnley CID said: “This was an extremely sinister offence. Thankfully Taylor-Waters was interrupted before he could take his worrying behaviour any further.”

Six years earlier, in 2016, when Taylor-Waters was convicted of penetrating a horse, he had been told by District Judge Jones he had been “lucky to avoid jail”.

The Lancashire Telegraph reported he had to pay £85 in costs and a £60 victim surcharge as well as attend a sex offender programme, complete 30 days of rehab, and became the subject of a two-year community order.
