Man City fan Noel Gallagher hits back at Jamie Carragher over Erling Haaland claim

‘No one listens to him!’: Musician and Man City fan Noel Gallagher hits back at Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher over his claim striker Erling Haaland chose the WRONG club

Noel Gallagher has blasted Jamie Carragher after his criticism of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

Liverpool icon Carragher suggested earlier this month that the Norwegian striker may have picked the wrong club in joining City and claimed they look a ‘lesser team’ with him playing.

But Haaland, 22, has 31 goals in 29 games in all competitions so far this season – and former Oasis star and City fan Gallagher took pundit Carragher to task over his comments.

Speaking about his side’s Wednesday evening’s clash with Premier League title rivals Arsenal, Gallagher said on Talksport: ‘I think it will be a great game. I think it will be an open game.

‘I think there’s goals because we can’t defend to save our lives and we’re pretty good going forward. It’d be nice to see Haaland turn up tonight and smash a few in – it’s going to be tough though.’

Presenter Gabby Agbonlahor then asked: ‘But Noel, Jamie Carragher said Haaland chose the wrong team. Do you believe that?’

To which the famous guitarist responded: ‘Yeah, but no one listens to Carragher, do they?’, causing laughter in the studio for Agbonlahor and co-host Alan Brazil.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has jumped to the defence of under-fire City striker Haaland amid Carragher’s recent suggestions the record-breaking goalscorer makes Pep Guardiola’s side worse.

City are amidst a crisis after they were charged with over 100 rule breaches by the Premier League, but there has also been focus on Haaland’s contribution to the team following a run of difficult performances.

City produced another unusually poor performance in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Spurs that saw them fail to pounce on a golden opportunity to close the gap to league leaders Arsenal.

Haaland didn’t manage a shot on target for the first time this season, but former Man United defender Ferdinand justifiably protested the Norwegian’s innocence in City’s latest showings.

‘I see some people saying he has made Man City worse. I don’t know how you can put 25 goals into a team and it makes you worse,’ Ferdinand told his FIVE Youtube channel. ‘I can’t get my head around it, just can’t.

‘One thing in the way he plays that is definitely a negative to the way they play compared to last season and the season before is their No 9 before would drop in – whether it’s (Gabriel) Jesus, they would (use Ilkay) Gundogan sometimes, (Phil) Foden, (Raheem) Sterling, that number nine would drop in and create an overload.

Former Red Devils star Dwight Yorke, who recently left his role as manager of Macarthur FC in Australia, reacted to Carragher’s assessment by telling OLBG that listeners should take what the former defender has to say ‘with a pinch of salt’.

He said: ‘What a ludicrous statement from Jamie Carragher to say that Erling Haaland has not picked the right club in Manchester City, it’s a ridiculous statement.

‘Everyone has their opinion I suppose and we’ve both played the game at a certain level, but I’d take whatever Carragher says with a pinch of salt.

‘If Haaland is running in behind and not being passed to, it means Pep Guardiola has to tell the players on the ball to pass him the ball. It has nothing to do with Haaland choosing the ‘wrong team’. City are the best team and have been for the past four years, what team would Haaland be better suited to if not Manchester City?’
