Andrea Riseborough misses Oscars luncheon following row over Best Actress nomination

Entertainment royalty flooded Beverly Hills on Monday as the annual Oscars Nominees Luncheon took place, marking a month until the 2023 Academy Awards. However, Best Actress nominee Andrea Riseborough was notably absent at the star-studded affair, stirring rumours that the actress has snubbed the event in light of the controversy caused by her nomination.

Of the five actresses nominated for Best Actress this year, only three appeared at the luncheon, but Andrea’s lacking presence was far more visible than her fellow nominee Ana de Armas.

The Matilda star has been shrouded in controversy for a few weeks now, but a spokesperson assured that this was not the reason behind her no-show.

The actress’ representative told Express.co.uk: “Andrea is in production on The Palace in Europe and it was not possible for her to travel to LA due to her shooting schedule.

According to Variety, over 200 guests attended the lavish affair including 182 Oscar nominees making it the largest turnout in history of the awards.

Alongside Andrea and Ana, actor Barry Keoghan, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, David Byrne and James Cameron were also unable to attend the luncheon.

With such a big collection of Hollywood A-listers in a single place, fans looked on as they watched their favourite actors, musicians, directors and crew members interact.

Tom Cruise was spotted at the event, enjoying his first red carpet in eight months and eagerly chatting with his fellow stars Austin Butler and Jamie Lee Curtis.

After more than four decades in the industry, Jamie has now received her first-ever nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

It is also Austin’s first nomination for his portrayal as the late Elvis Presley in the Bas Lurhman biopic Elvis.

Also in attendance were Colin Farrell, Bill Nighy, Jenny Slate, Angela Bassett and Michelle Williams.

Andrea was announced as one of the five actresses in the running for the Best Actress Academy Award this year in January.

The actress, who has been acting for almost two decades, earned a nomination for her role in the low-budget film To Leslie.

The film, reportedly inspired by a true story, sees Andrea portraying a single mother who wins the lottery but squanders with shocking speed.

To Leslie garnered just £22,376 globally according to Box Office Mojo, with one other particular factor adding to the controversy of Andrea’s first nomination.

Among the other four nominees are Cate Blanchett for Tar, Ana de Armas for the Marilyn Monroe biopic blonde, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans and Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh.

However, the notable snubbing of Viola Davis’ role in The Woman King and Danielle Deadwyler’s performance in Till.

The uproar this caused invoked an emergency board meeting of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last week which ruled that her nomination could stand.

Andrea’s fellow nominee, Michelle Yeoh, shared her support for the actress on BBC’s Today programme, saying: “I love (Viola and Danielle) to the extreme and wish we were all getting Oscars but it’s tough.”

“It took me 40 years to even get a nomination.”
