Everton are ‘keen to sign former Real Madrid star Isco’ on a free transfer after the midfielder’s potential move to Union Berlin fell through, as the Toffees look to replace Anthony Gordon

  • Isco, 30, has been without a club since his departure from Sevilla in December
  • Union Berlin were unable to lure the midfielder due to high contract demands

Everton are eyeing a potential move for former Real Madrid star Isco on a free transfer after his move to Union Berlin was scrapped.

The free agent, who has been without a club since his departure from Sevilla in December, travelled to Germany to complete his deadline day move to the Bundesliga outfit.

However, Union Berlin were unable to lure the midfielder to the German capital, as demands ‘contrary to the previous agreement’ put a stop to the move – therefore leaving him searching for a new club.

Following the breakdown of his move to Berlin, Everton are now keen to snap up Isco as they look for ways to improve their squad despite the transfer window being shut, according Spanish newspaper outlet Sport.

The Toffees, who failed to sign anyone during the January transfer window, see the 30-year-old as a good fit to replace Anthony Gordon who left to join Newcastle for £40million plus £5m in add-ons.

It would be seen as a huge coup for Everton who are currently sitting 19th in the Premier League and level on points with bottom of league table Southampton, especially given Berlin were keen to sign him just couldn’t afford to do so.

A statement from Union Berlin on Tuesday read: ‘We wanted to have Isco in Berlin, but we have our limits.

‘These were exceeded today — contrary to the previous agreement. The transfer will not happen.’

Isco and Sevilla mutually agreed to terminate the Spaniard’s contract in December after the midfielder fell out of favour with head coach Jorge Sampaoli, who insisted he ‘did not meet the club’s expectations’.

He only managed to record a goal and three assists in his 19 appearances for Sevilla since joining from Los Blancos last August.

Isco left Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer after running down the remaining months of his long-term contract at the Bernabeu, where he had scored 53 goals in 353 appearances during his nine-year stay.

During his time with Los Blancos, Isco won five Champions League titles, three LaLiga titles and four Club World Cups since arriving from Malaga in 2013.

Isco has also scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for Spain, but has not been involved with the national team since 2019.
