Whoopi Goldberg Won’t Let Joy Behar Forget Her Infamous On-Air Tumble During Football Safety Convo on ‘The View’

The View fans may have moved beyond Joy Behar‘s infamous fall nearly a year later, but Whoopi Goldberg sure hasn’t. The co-host slipped in a joke about Behar’s tumble on today’s show, reminding her of the incident during a conversation about Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who remains in critical condition after collapsing on the field during a Monday (Jan. 2) game.

The discussion began with the panelists sharing their own experiences with football in their families. Sunny Hostin, who described Hamlin’s cardiac arrest as “every parents’ nightmare with a kid who plays football,” shared her own son’s story with the sport. Hostin said her son was recruited to college for football, but quit the sport after “a terrible hamstring injury,” which made him consider the potential damage to other parts of his body, including his brain.

“It was a very hard thing for him because he loved doing it,” she said, later explaining that her son valued the bonding experience football gave him.

Behar pointed out that other sports offer the same family feel, quipping, “play golf!” as Hostin shrugged.

Goldberg then chimed in with her own take, telling the panel that some parents may not have a choice about their children playing football and can only hope to give their kids information about the risks associated with the sport. She also noted that other sports cause injuries, too, remarking, “You run and trip on the tennis court and pull a hamstring. You can get hurt— look, somebody I know fell off a chair, okay?”

Alyssa Farah Griffin immediately caught on to Goldberg’s reference and asked, “Was it Joy?”

Behar took a tumble from her View seat last year, falling during the start of a live show in March 2022. The co-host slipped out of her chair, but laughed it off, joking, “25 years, that has never happened. Who do I sue?!”

On today’s show, she kept the humor going, telling Goldberg, “I’ll do it again if it makes you happy,” then pretended to lose her balance as Hostin placed a protective hand on her arm.

After The View replaced their chairs this season, Behar’s odds of falling are quite slim. The show swapped out its old seats in September 2022 and opted for new ones without swivel bases, Entertainment Weekly previously reported.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
