The 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman died in September in the custody of the morality police who detained Ms Amini on the grounds of “inappropriate attire”. Men and women have taken to the streets in some of the largest protests in the country, with women cutting their hair and shunning the hijab, sometimes even burning it.
The protests have led to at least 100 people being sentenced to death or charged with capital offences.
Now a top Iranian chess player is fearing for her life after competing in a tournament without the mandatory hijab.
Sara Khadem, 25, took part in the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, an international tournament in Kazakhstan.
According to the International Chess Federation, Khadem is ranked 804 in the world and has just returned to chess after welcoming her first baby.
Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, as she is also known, has been seen playing without the hijab on two occasions during the championships this week.
It has been reported that Ms Khadem has decided to relocate to Spain over fears of the consequences if she returns to Iran.
Spanish newspaper El País reported that the star chess player will live in Spain with her husband Ardeshir Ahmadi and their child.
Sources close to the couple told the newspaper that the pair own an apartment in Spain, but the location will be kept private amid safety concerns.
One source told El País: “She is aware that her life would be in danger if she returned to Iran because she has been shown playing without a head covering in several photographs.”
