Josh Lucas ‘campaigned’ Reese Witherspoon to return for ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ sequel

Josh Lucas wants Reese Witherspoon to return where the skies are so blue.

Lucas said Thursday that he is ready to return for a potential sequel to the 2002 hit “Sweet Home Alabama” provided that his co-star Reese Witherspoon is open to returning as well, exclusively reports Entertainment Tonight.

“I would love to. I’ve campaigned her. I’m not gonna say that she’s the problem, but I think part of it is that Reese is so busy,” said the 51-year-old actor.

“I really believe that — I’m assuming, I hope — she wants to be part of it. Carving out that piece of her life isn’t so easy for her. I don’t have the same responsibilities or time constraints, so I hope that she could find a time to do it. I’ll be there tomorrow.”

The film — which celebrated its 20th anniversary in September — stars Witherspoon as an up-and-coming fashion designer who returns home to announce her impending wedding to another man only to find that her ex-husband has yet to sign the divorce papers.

Despite Witherspoon’s career potentially holding up the prospective sequel, Lucas says that he is immensely proud of Witherspoon’s rise to stardom.

“I go back to when we were shooting that movie, I had this moment where I was like, ‘Wow, this woman is a really brilliant, powerful person,’” he said. “Not just, obviously, being a great actress, comedian that she was — she’s in her mid-20s at that point. I said to the director, I said to a couple of people, ‘Reese is gonna run a movie studio.’ They were like, ‘Really?’”

“If you look at what she’s doing, she’s become a mogul,” Lucas continued referencing Witherspoon’s own production company, Hello Sunshine.

Witherspoon said while on the TODAY show in October that doing a sequel “would be a great idea.”
