Colonies of rats scurried their way through an Indian police warehouses, eating hundreds of kilograms worth of seized marijuana that was locked away as criminal evidence, CNN reported.
Authorities estimate that over 700 kilograms of pot were potentially noshed on by the furry obstructions to justice in the city of Mathura, according to Judge Sanjay Chaudhary per the BBC.
“All of it was under danger of infestation by rats,” he warned.
The edible evidence was valued at $500,000, reported Indy100.
The court is also aware that the new enemy is anything but fearful of justice, according to CNN.
“Rats are small animals, and they aren’t scared of the police,” the local legal system noted after police were unable to display an expected 200 kilograms of marijuana as court’s evidence.
A fellow judiciary member in the city was anything but surprised and recalled when over 500 kilograms of cannabis had been scarfed down by rodents at a city precinct.
“There’s a rat menace in almost all police stations,” a court document read. “Hence, necessary arrangements need to be made to safeguard the cannabis that’s been confiscated.”
However, Mathura City Police Superintendent Martand Prakash Singh denies any presence of rats near the evidence lockers.
“There was no reference to rats in the [report submitted to the court],” he told CNN. “The police only mentioned that the seized cannabis was destroyed in the rains and flooding.”
If the rats are to blame, it wouldn’t be the first time they were looking to party in the Asian nation.
Cheeseaters had gotten into “thousands” of liters of confiscated alcohol in the state of Bihar in 2017, according to the BBC. The lasting effects of the rats’ hangovers was not reported on at the time.
