Meghan and Kate 'take leaf out of Diana's book' with outfit choices – 'colourful display'

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has an enviable collection of tailored separates that she can dress up or dress down depending on the occasion.

However, when she needs to dress smartly for events like her visit to the UN earlier this year, Meghan embraces a wardrobe staple beloved by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at online destination for independent fashion brands SilkFred, said: “The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has shown us an elegant and clean-cut approach to her royal style, and one of the key items in her wardrobe that contribute to this aesthetic is the pencil skirt.

“Meghan has worn many pencil skirts, from leather to checked, and usually paired with a chiffon v-neck blouse. Similarly, Princess Diana was often seen wearing pencil skirts, however, in true 1980s fashion she usually styled hers with a wide belt to cinch her waist.”

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is famed for her stylish fashion sense, often opting for bolder fashions than other members of the Royal Family just like Princess Diana did in her royal era.

Megan added: “We’ve seen Meghan Markle sporting double denim on numerous occasions, showcasing her take on a relaxed, everyday look which is stylish and classic all-American.

“Likewise, Princess Diana was a huge denim lover, and was papped several times wearing a double denim combo of jeans and a shirt.”

Kate also dresses to impress by wearing a statement blazer, a staple of her mother-in-law’s wardrobe too, but she takes a different approach to her skirts.

“Undoubtedly one of Princess Diana’s most memorable looks was power dressing, a trend which she was known for championing in the 1980s,” Megan explained.

“She was often seen wearing a statement blazer skirt suit, using the structured silhouette as an armour during her royal duties. Since joining the Royal Family, Princess Kate has also proven to be a fan of the structured blazer and skirt combo, however, Kate often favours a more feminine a-line skirt versus a pencil skirt which Princess Diana favoured.”

Criticisms levelled at Kate’s style are usually to do with her love of ‘safe’ fashion ensembles, often turning to coatdresses and elegant gowns, but she has also embraced a modern and more casual approach to royal dressing.

Megan said: “Although we’ve seen Kate in many stunning gowns and designer numbers fit for a Princess, she has also shown a more casual approach to royal fashion, wearing skinny or mom-fit jeans with t-shirts or long-sleeved button-up shirts.

“Clearly, Kate has taken inspiration from the late Diana, who created her own take on everyday style, favouring a relaxed look of jeans and a t-shirt, which only added to her charm – making her even more relatable to women everywhere.”
