World Cup fans are CONVINCED that Argentina fell to their shock Saudi Arabia defeat on purpose… with eagle-eyed supporters pointing out Lionel Messi and Co will avoid arch-rivals Brazil in the knockouts by finishing second in Group C

Sceptic football fans have theorised that Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia on purpose to avoid facing Brazil until the final of the World Cup.

The South Americans suffered one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history on Tuesday when they were beaten 2-1, a result which means they will now probably have to win both their remaining games to top their group.

With Brazil expected to ease through Group G, it was expected they would face Argentina in the semi-finals if all went to plan, but, if Argentina come second in their group, they will fall on the opposite side of the draw.

Several Twitter users have put forward the idea that Lionel Messi and co. lost deliberately to avoid their rivals as they tasted defeat for the first time in 37 international matches.

‘Argentina lost on purpose so they can avoid Brazil until the end and from now on they won’t be losing they’ll go unbeaten all the way to the final and win the whole thing’, said one user.

‘Am I the only one who think Argentina lost on purpose to get 2nd place in group?’ asked a second.

A third added: ‘They can’t afford to have any more slip ups from here.’

The side will face Mexico on Saturday in what is now a crunch game in Group C, with Saudi Arabia looking to qualify by seeing off Poland on the same day.
