A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Tonga today.

The earthquake, with a depth of six miles, struck in the sea about 128 miles east of the south-east of Neiafu, a town in the northeast of the Pacific archipelago nation. 

A tsunami advisory was issued for American Samoa this morning, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

Officials said hazardous tsunami waves from the earthquake are possible within 186 miles of the quake’s epicentre along the coasts of Tonga and Niue.
