Three anti-ageing hair colours that 'really make a difference’ for women 40+

Normally, when thinking about ways to look younger, the mind gravitates toward skincare products, clever makeup techniques or tweakments. But one of the easiest ways to take a few years off is by choosing an anti-ageing hair colour. Express.co.uk spoke to senior stylist and colour degree expert David McNeil from Charles Worthington Salons, about the various ways to achieve a youthful hairstyle.

As women get older, their hair will change, and David explained some of the issues that arise.

He said: “Less than half of women maintain a full head of hair throughout their life!

“Hereditary hair loss in women typically starts aged 40+, and by the age of 50, roughly 40 percent of women have noticeable hair loss.

“Sadly it’s not only genetics that can cause hair loss, stress, health concerns and medication have a big impact on hair,” the expert continued.

Anyone looking to achieve “extra volume” should consider a graduated bob.

In terms of colour, David said: “Dimensional colour tends to be better – solid colours can look flat and dull where a soft balayage or a few highlights can help to give the appearance of more hair.

“Be careful not to over-lighten the hair to prevent breakage,” so those ladies trying to hide grey hair with bleach, should reconsider.

Another way to risk hair breakage is by having pre-colour treatments.

David explained: “Having a L’Oréal professional metal detox pre-colour treatment in a salon will help to remove any metal in the hair giving a cleaner base to colour from but also reduces the risk of breakage by 87 percent.”

But ladies should also be looking at what products they wash their hair with at home.

The expert said: “L’Oréal professional’s Pro longer range helps to thicken long hair and increase hairs health and strength, using the shampoo and conditioner can reduce breakage by 95 percent.”

And for anyone looking to achieve thicker hair, “L’Oréal professional serioxyl range has some really good products”.

David spoke about one hair serum in particular: “The Denser hair serum is applied directly to the scalp every day for three months it boosts hair density in as little as six weeks, and it contains Stemoxydine and Resvératrol.”

Anyone suffering from hair loss, David suggested using the Aminexil treatment.

It is “a daily treatment for six weeks it thickens hair strands to provide a denser appearance, with Omega 6 Complex it conditions the roots to strengthen all the hair”.

“The formula restores moisture and volume to lifeless locks for hair that looks and feels healthier,” he added.
