New Jersey shooting: Tactical firearms officers on scene after reports of incident

Police in New Jersey are responding to the reported shooting of police officers today in a residential area about a mile west of Newark airport, with reports suggesting a suspect is armed with a “long gun”. Details on the number of officers hurt or the extent of their injuries are not immediately available, nor are there currently any details about the suspect.

However, State Assemblyman Ralph Caputo told the New York Times reporting two have been injured, one being shot in the neck, one in the leg.

He added: “We don’t know what the end result is going to be.

“It’s traumatic. In this day and age you never know when something like this is going to happen.”

Barry Eisen, the manager of a building in nearby Chancellor Avenue, said the superintendent had seen a man with a rifle.

Video taken from news helicopters showed police officers in tactical gear gathered on streets in the neighbourhood and searching on top of and around the base of at least one multi-story building.

Police vehicles could be seen placed to block roads in the area.

Governor Phil Murphy said he was monitoring “an unfolding situation in Newark,” but did not share specifics.

His statement added: “I am in touch with local authorities and the state is providing resources as requested.

“We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”

Fox5NY reporter Linda Schmidt tweeted: “FBI on scene, ATF & US Marshals.

“Suspect armed with long gun.”

The FBI has confirmed they are involved.
