‘No need for chemicals!’ Gardeners share how to remove weeds without using weed killers

Using weed killers, also known as herbicides, can have an impact on the surrounding environment and wildlife. Some herbicides can contaminate the soil and rainwater which can then carry the chemicals to other areas like waterways.

Instead, gardeners should opt for natural methods to remove weeds which won’t have an impact on pets and any wildlife in the garden like toads, frogs and hedgehogs.

Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their simple method for getting rid of weeds without chemicals.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

Removing weeds in this way also ensures existing plants are not damaged or killed in the process.

Other suggestions for killing weeds included using salt, vinegar, fabrics and cardboard.

Stuart Egerton said: “You can make the table salt solution by dissolving 150g of table salt in 150ml of boiling water.

“Stir to make sure the salt dissolves before adding other ingredients. Salt solution and distilled white vinegar and washing up liquid if using for weeds.”

Patricia Clegg commented: “We used half and half water and vinegar, killed all our weeds.

“I bought five litres from Amazon for just under £14 delivered to the door.”

Angela Sharman replied: “One gallon of white wine vinegar, 400g of table salt and a squirt of washing-up liquid. Mix and put in a spray bottle, works really well.”

Hazel Gibson suggested: “You could cover with weed-suppressing fabric or cardboard. You can put compost on cardboard.”

Tracey Sims commented: “I have tried all the natural mixes and they work until it rains and up they come again with a vengeance.

“I don’t have the physical capacity nor the time to spend hours and hours tending to my garden.

“I have found trimming them back then using a weeding blow torch from Amazon has helped me with my patio and drive this year!”

Cathy Tait replied: “Salt is the best – it works for me.”
