Black Panther Wakanda Forever trailer confirms Chadwick Boseman's replacement

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever teased in Marvel Studios trailer

Fans of the Black Panther series just received the latest trailer from Black Panther Wakanda Forever. Hitting the net just weeks before it is due to hit cinemas, the new footage shows off a number of heartwrenching scenes in the Marvel movie, including a funeral scene for T’Challa, which will surely act as a memorial for Chadwick Boseman’s contribution to the series. But the real question on fans’ lips has been: Who is going to take over as the Black Panther?

The final seconds of the new trailer showed T’Challa’s younger sister, Shuri, standing in a tech-filled room in an airship.

As the trailer cut away from her, viewers saw a hole open up at the bottom of the aircraft, dropping a Black Panther figure out of the vehicle – a moment very reminiscent of the original Black Panther movie.

When the figure lands, the camera panned up to show a short, female figure in the vibranium Black Panther armour.

This likely confirms that it is Shuri who will be taking over from T’Challa after his in-universe death.

Fans have assumed Shuri would take over the mantle of the Black Panther considering she is next in line for the throne of Wakanda. And if Shuri takes over it would not be a massive surprise, considering her actor, Letitia Wright, recently alluded to it in an interview.

She was asked by Empire if she will be taking over from Boseman. Wright replied: “That’s a tricky question to answer. I had a chat about it with Ryan and Chad when we were making Black Panther, and we touched on it briefly.”

Shuri also takes over the mantle of the Black Panther briefly in the comic books while T’Challa was put in a coma by Doctor Doom. With this in mind, Wright added: “When I realised I was playing Shuri, it was something that I really looked forward to.”

If Shuri is not the new Black Panther, there have been a few other potential candidates primed to take over the superhero guise.

Nakia has been a fan-favourite since the first movie, and could be under the mask – but because she is not a member of the Wakandan royal family it may be a tough call.

Meanwhile, the leader of the rival family, M’Baku, has also been suggested as a great replacement for T’Challa.

The new trailer also showed off many characters mourning T’Challa’s death, but it also introduced some major characters in earnest.

Viewers got a better look at Namor, the King of Atlantis, taking on Wakanda and some American soldiers on a ship in the ocean, suggesting that political tensions are high around the world.

It also showed off the first real look at Iron Man’s replacement: Riri Williams. In the Marvel comic books, she took on the mantle of Ironheart using Tony Stark’s Iron Man technology.

The trailer showed her flying through the sky while fighting against the Atlanteans, continuing the original Avenger’s legacy.

A lot of information has been kept secret in Black Panther Wakanda Forever, however. For instance, the topic of how and when T’Challa died has been shrouded in mystery. But it will likely be the main focus of the upcoming sequel to the billion-dollar franchise.

Marvel has been tight-lipped since Boseman’s death on what would happen to the hero.

Boseman died on August 28, 2020 after suffering from colon cancer. His death came as a shock to people all over Hollywood as he kept news of his illness very quiet.

Captain Marvel star Brie Larson said: “”Chadwick was someone who radiated power and peace. Who stood for so much more than himself. Who took the time to really see how you were doing and gave words of encouragement when you felt unsure. I’m honored to have the memories I have. The conversations, the laughter. My heart is with you and your family. You will be missed and never forgotten. Rest in power and peace my friend.” (sic)

Likewise, Barack Obama said: “Chadwick came to the White House to work with kids when he was playing Jackie Robinson. You could tell right away that he was blessed. To be young, gifted, and Black; to use that power to give them heroes to look up to; to do it all while in pain – what a use of his years.”

Black Panther Wakanda Forever hits cinemas on November 11.

Black Panther is available to watch now on Disney Plus.
