Emergency services in Hazmat suits descend on EU headquarters in Brussels after ‘suspicious white powder’ is found near President Ursula Von Der Leyen’s office

  • The headquarters were sent an envelope with a suspicious white powder in it
  • Emergency crews called to the building in Brussels at around 11.50am local time
  • Situation is said to be ‘under control’ and there will be no evacuation of building 

Emergency services in Hazmat suits have descended on the EU headquarters in Brussels after a ‘suspicious white powder’ was found near President Ursula Von Der Leyen’s office. 

Brussels Fire Brigade told the The Brussels Times that the headquarters, called The Berlaymont, had been sent an envelope with the white powder in it.

Crews were called to the 13th floor of the building, where the office of Ursula Von der Leyen is, at around 11.50 local time and the incident was initially thought to be a fire.

The crews were seen outside the building in Brussels but it is said that the situation is ‘under control’.

There will be no evacuation of the headquarters. The substance is being analysed by Civil Protection.

Spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade Walter Derieuw said that one person had come into contact with the substance.

They added that they have not shown any medical symptoms.  

Emergency services have placed the room where the envelope was found under quarantine.
