More than 140 leaders from countries with more than 90 percent of the world’s forests agreed to work together to reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030. Mr Sharma said: “I’m proud to be calling for this partnership. Forests are a precious resource that act as the lungs of the world.
“At COP26, we saw incredible ambition with more than 140 countries committing to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030.”
“This partnership is a critical next step to collectively deliver on this promise and help keep the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C alive.”
The US, Norway and Gabon are among members who will meet at COP27 in Egypt in November.
Woodlands makes up around 14 percent of the land area of the UK, with 3.2 million hectares.

More than half of the £90,000 needed has been raised to transform the woodland into a wildlife haven, with the support of naturalist Chris Packham and model Jo Wood.
Ecotricity founder Dale Vince, who backs the appeal, said: “Horse Common is a vital piece of the wildlife puzzle in the New Forest – it sits between two wildlife areas the RSPB manages.
“If our campaign with the Daily Express is successful – the RSPB will be able to join the dots for nature and create one much bigger wildlife area – and create some new habitats like wet woodlands.”
