'Important' advice for beginning your weight loss journey- get 'the best start'

Starting something new can be daunting for anyone and for people beginning a journey to a fitter, healthier them, the thought of joining a gym can be especially scary. But the nation’s favourite personal trainer Joe Wicks has revealed how people wanting to kickstart their healthier lifestyle can do just that but feel comfortable while doing so.

As a PT, Joe has been in the fitness game for many years but he also had to start somewhere.

Many fitness experts suggest working out in a group setting as it can boost motivation, burn more calories and make exercise fun.

But Joe acknowledged that it can be intimidating for many people and offered some handy advice to get them feeling more confident.

He said: “I like working out in a group but I also love being on my own.”

The diet guru has just finished his UK tour where he put over 800 people through their paces in a bid to get the UK fit.

“It’s about trying different things,” he added.

“If you’ve got no confidence to try a class or join a gym, then maybe working out at home is the best start for you.”

He suggested following fitness accounts such as his own YouTube channel, which offers lots of beginner workouts to get people started.

DON’T MISS

“If going to a class is going to make it challenging and you’re not actually going to get there, then maybe it’s best to just do a YouTube video at home in your living room.”

While home workouts sound delightful for those on a time limit, it’s vital people still “keep themselves accountable” in the comfort of their own space.

Group workouts can be good for this as working along side others in an exercise class can help people to stay motivated and inspire them to keep going.

Joe suggested completing his go-to workout that can be done either at the gym or at home.

He explained that there’s one workout technique in particular that can burn body fat very quickly and it doesn’t take long either.

“I’ve always relied on HIIT (high-intensity interval training) training in a time situation,” he said.

“If you haven’t got an hour to go to the gym or do a long run then HIIT training is very good.

“You’re doing a 25-minute workout and you can do so much work in such as short space of time.”

A HIIT workout session is a combination of short, very high-intensity bursts of exercise followed by equal or longer periods of rest.

People should be working at around 80 to 90 percent of their maximum heart rate for that period of time and Joe’s workout usually consists of 40 seconds of work, 20 seconds of rest and repeat for 25 to 30 minutes.

“That’s the best training because it’s so intense you feel really good by the end of it and it’s quite good for your mental health, too,” he added.
