Cruise holidays often have a few formal events for passengers to get dressed up. Certain venues such as restaurants and bars onboard will also have dress codes.
On Reddit, a passenger shared their experience of being “turned away” after breaking a dress code.
They said: “A member of my party was turned away from a speciality restaurant for wearing shorts.
“He returned late from an excursion and didn’t think it would be a big deal. In the end, it wasn’t.
“Our party was seated without him and he changed and returned before we even ordered our food.”

Another passenger added: “We saw a man turned away from the main dining room wearing his pyjamas.
“He didn’t understand why that was a problem.”
A regular cruiser said: “Some places have a dress code. These places are super fancy so of course you wouldn’t be able to wear shorts and a tank top in there.
“Just like on land. There are restaurants like that.”
While some passengers might hate getting dressed up in formal clothes, others enjoy a smart environment.

One passenger said: “Even on the fancy dress night there were people in the main dining room with basketball shorts and a t-shirt on.
“It was a little disappointing as I was excited to see a lot of pretty dresses and fancy suits.”
A guest shared that their husband had been turned away from a formal night for wearing golf clothes.
Dress code rules may also depend on how busy the venue is and on the staff working in the evening.

Passengers aren’t allowed to have swimwear, be barefoot or wear flip flops in the ship’s dining rooms.
Tank tops, robes and baseball caps are also not allowed in the dining room while shorts sometimes aren’t permitted at dinner.
Passengers will be able to find dress code information on their cruise line’s website and can also choose to dine at less formal venues.
If guests want to indulge at one of the cruise’s most exclusive dining experiences they may need to prepare to be very smartly dressed.
