Trump tells guests at Bedminster wedding he will endorse Mike DeWine for Ohio governor

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday used a wedding speech to announce that he plans to bury the hatchet and endorse one of his Republican foes Mike DeWine, who is running to retain his position as Ohio governor.

It marks a turnaround for Trump who based DeWine as a ‘terrible, terrible guy’ at a rally in the state in April.

And he previously steered clear of offering any endorsement as DeWine – one of the first senior Republicans to admit that Joe Biden had won the 2020 election, and who was criticized by others in the party for his robust pandemic lockdown measures – faced Trumpy rivals in the party primary.

But on Saturday, in typically unconventional fashion, the former president used a wedding at his New Jersey golf club to announce that all was forgiven.

An attendee at Bedminster Golf Club said, his speech praised groom Max Miller, a former aide who is now running for an Ohio House seat.

‘He told Max let your governor know I’m going to support him and he trashed the Democratic candidate, who was mayor and was nasty to him when he visited Ohio,’ said the guest.

‘He said to Max, let him know I’m going to be backing him all the way.’

He offered no further clues for his reversal but the decision comes after DeWine secured the party nomination in May.

He fought off three challengers who positioned themselves to his right and who desperately courted Trump.

Although the former president avoided endorsing anyone, he made clear his disdain for the incumbent.

10 days before the primary, while stumping for Republican candidates in Ohio, he laid into DeWine.

‘No matter what happened, we had this terrible governor that you had. Terrible, terrible guy,’ said Trump. ‘And he was fighting us.’

Trump had suggested he might back anyone who challenged DeWine for the nomination, after the Ohio governor acknowledged Biden as president elect a week after the result was announced.

‘Who will be running for governor of the great state of Ohio? Will be hotly contested!’ he tweeted.

And after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, DeWine said it was time to move on.

‘Joe Biden has been elected president of the United States and is going to be sworn-in in two weeks,’ he said.

However, DeWine now faces Nan Whaley. The Democratic mayor of Dayton shot to national prominence after calling Trump variously ‘a fraud’ and a ‘bully and a coward’ after his summer 2019 visit to the state.

The wedding guest said the former president was on fine form on Saturday evening, although he declined invitations to join the dancing.

He spoke for about 10 minutes, delivering his thoughts on the Ohio race but also praising Miller, 33, who married Emily Moreno, 28. She is the daughter and former campaign manager of Bernie Moreno, who dropped out of the GOP race for Ohio’s Senate seat in February.

Miller and Moreno had gotten engaged last year. Miller won the GOP primary for Ohio’s 7th District seat in May after joining the race in an attempt to defeat Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, R, for his vote to impeach Trump. Gonzalez later announced retirement.

Miller and Moreno both grew up in the Cleveland area, he in the affluent Shaker Heights suburb and she in Westlake. Miller is an heir of the prominent Forest City Enterprises real estate company and Moreno is the daughter of a luxury auto dealer-turned-Senate candidate who suspended his campaign in February after meeting with Trump.

The pair met while working on Sen. Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign in 2015. They dated briefly before parting ways when Miller left to work on Trump’s campaign and Moreno left to work for Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc. They rekindled when Moreno left Johnson to work for a Washington, D.C.-based public affairs firm.

Since then, Moreno has created a dating app for Trump supporters and worked for her father’s Senate campaign while making appearances with Miller throughout his campaign.

The wedding was loaded with right-wing political powerhouses, including former acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell, former Trump advisor KellyAnne Conway and even Trump himself.

Miller previously dated Stephanie Grisham, the former White House press secretary. Their relationship came to an end in 2020 when Miller pushed Grisham up against a wall and slapped her after she accused him of cheating on her, sources told Politico. Grisham originally declined to comment on the allegations and Miller denied the assault allegations.

In October 2021 Grisham, 46, wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post claiming that the Trumps ‘didn’t seem to care’ when she told them her relationship with Miller had turned ‘abusive.’

Miller then filed a libel suit against Grisham.
