Chelsea target Wesley Fofana to complete his medical in the US ahead of £70m move

Chelsea order Wesley Fofana to fly to New York for his medical, with new owner Todd Boehly worried that £70m defender’s broken leg and ankle dislocation kept him out for seven months last season

  • Chelsea and Leicester have reached an agreement over defender Wesley Fofana
  • The centre back is due to join Chelsea in a deal worth around £70million
  • Fofana has been flown out to the US to complete his medical with the Blues
  • This has been done to give owner Todd Boehly ‘additional peace of mind’
  • This follows the defender missing most of last season with a serious injury

Chelsea have reportedly flown Wesley Fofana out to the US to complete his medical as his move to Stamford Bridge edges closer.

Fofana’s switch to the Blues has taken some time to negotiate, with Leicester rejecting multiple offers in recent weeks.

However, the Foxes finally accepted a fee in the region of £70m on Friday, and the 21-year-old centre back arrived Stateside on Sunday to undergo his medical checks, according to The Athletic.

It is understood that Fofana has gone to the east coast of the US to finalise his move to give the club’s owner Todd Boehly further peace of mind after the Frenchman missed seven months of last season with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

He returned to Leicester’s starting XI in the final weeks of the campaign, and has shown no ill-effects of his injury, but it appears that Boehly wants to take a detailed look at his current condition before making Fofana one of the most expensive defenders in Premier League history.

Chelsea’s decision to fly Fofana over to the US means that he is almost certain to miss their trip to Southampton on Tuesday night.

Fofana has agreed a six-year deal with the west London club, but the transfer is still expected to take another couple of days before it is officially announced.

However, if there are no further issues, he could be in line to make his debut for Thomas Tuchel’s side when they host West Ham on Saturday.

Fofana started Leicester’s opening two games of this season, but was then left out of the team’s home clash with Southampton earlier this month as Brendan Rodgers claimed he was not in the right frame of mind to play.

He was once again omitted from the squad when Leicester played Chelsea on Saturday, having been made to train with the under-23s in the build-up to that match, and his time at Leicester is now set to end in the coming days.
