Facebook down: Strange celebrity newsfeed bug is affecting thousands of users

If your Facebook newsfeed looks weird this morning you are definitely not alone. Thousands of users are complaining that their accounts have been hit by a strange bug that’s showing random posts from celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Ronaldo, Ryan Reynold and even US President Joe Biden. The gremlins appear to have begun at around 7:15am BST with reports now flooding in from across the UK and other parts of the world. There’s no word on exactly who and how many people are affected or if it’s just on the app or website but it seems to be pretty widespread.

Down Detector, which monitors online outages, is currently showing over 2,600 Facebook down reports with that number growing rapidly by the minute.

Along with that indicator that something is seriously wrong, other social media platforms, including Twitter, are also full of users complaining about their odd newsfeed this morning.

Posting a tweet, one user called Dash said, “#Facebook wall is filled with spam post, is anyone facing same?” Whilst another user, called Morton, added: “Is anyone else’s Facebook feed full of random posts sent to celebrities?”

There’s currently no word on what is causing the issues although some are speculating that Facebook might have tweaked its algorithms overnight. Others have posted messages with concerns that their accounts may have been hacked although there’s currently nothing to suggest that’s the case.

Express.co.uk will update this article when we hear more.

This glitch comes as Facebook recently announced that it’s finally introducing a new “Feeds” tab that will show the latest posts in chronological order. According to the firm, this is one of the most requested features as it will make sure users never miss friends’ posts.

“We’re introducing Feeds, a new tab that lets you easily see the most recent posts from your friends, Pages and groups,” said the social network. “You can curate a Favorites list of the friends and Pages you care about most and filter their content in this new tab.”

Anyone who regularly uses the social network will be well aware that Facebook currently decides what it wants to show you in the news feed via an in-built algorithm. It’s been a frustration for years as it can make new posts almost impossible to find.
