European roundup: Werder Bremen’s late show leaves Dortmund rocked

Werder Bremen scored three times in the final minutes to come from two goals down and snatch a stunning 3-2 Bundesliga victory at Borussia Dortmund that ended the hosts’ winning start to the season. Goals from Lee Buchanan in the 89th minute and Niklas Schmidt in stoppage time brought them level before Oliver Burke thundered a shot in the final seconds past keeper Gregor Kobel.

Dortmund’s Julian Brandt had fired a blinder past Werder keeper Jiri Pavlenka in first-half stoppage time to take an unexpected lead after a dire 45 minutes for the hosts where nothing seemed to work. Werder, who had 10 shots on goal compared with Dortmund’s two by the 75th minute, were the more adventurous side throughout, their passing game more fluid and creative and their attacks more dangerous.

They were caught out again when Raphaël Guerreiro tried his luck from 25 metres out and beat Pavlenka with a low shot in the 77th minute. The visitors, however, refused to give up and scored what might have been a consolation goal through England youth international Buchanan’s superb strike into the top corner in the 89th. But Schmidt then drew them level before Burke’s stunning winner deep in added time, which left Dortmund on six points from their first three games.

“We are unfortunately talking about a deserved defeat,” Dortmund’s coach Edin Terzic told a news conference. “Still it’s frustrating when you are 2-0 up until the 89th minute even if you have not played well. It is difficult to explain it rationally. After they scored their first goal we started to shake. Even if our performance is not got we should be winning such matches.”

Champions Bayern Munich, also on six, are in action at VfL Bochum on Sunday. Borussia Mönchengladbach, 1-0 winners over Hertha Berlin on Friday, are top of the table on seven points.

Ruhr valley rivals Schalke are still waiting for their first league win since their return to the top flight this season after a goalless draw against Wolfsburg. Wolves’ keeper Coen Kasteels saved two consecutive spot-kicks from Simon Terodde when a first-half stoppage-time penalty had to be retaken.

Bayer Leverkusen, competing in this season’s Champions League group stage, slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat of the campaign across all competitions – and their third straight in the Bundesliga – when they went 3-0 down to Hoffenheim, capping their worst ever start to a league campaign.

RB Leipzig slumped to a 2-1 loss at Union Berlin to make it three straight Bundesliga games without a win as the crisis over their failed start deepens.

Spanish champions Real Madrid got their second consecutive win of the new La Liga season with a comfortable 4-1 victory at Celta Vigo. Luka Modric showed his everlasting value on the pitch by scoring a brilliant goal and assisting Vinícius for another.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring from the spot in the 14th minute after VAR spotted a handball inside the box but Celta equalised nine minutes later with a penalty of their own by Iago Aspas, after another handball.

Celta looked to be in control, however in the 41st minute Modric worked his magic by curling a shot from outside the box into the upper left corner. After the break, Modric teed up Vinícius to score the third in a lightning fast counterattack in the 56th minute. Ten minutes later, Federico Valverde finished another clinical counterattack to wrap up the points.

Eden Hazard had a chance to score with another penalty kick, given for a foul on Benzema, but Agustín Marchesin saved his effort. Elsewhere in Spain, Real Betis won 2-1 at Mallorca and Osasuna saw off Cádiz 2-0.

Internazionale cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Spezia in their first home game of the new Serie A season, making it back-to-back wins for Simone Inzaghi’s side.

Lautaro Martínez, Hakan Calhanoglu and Joaquín Correa all scored for Inter in a game where they were never really threatened by a toothless Spezia.

The hosts took the lead in the 35th minute when striker Romelu Lukaku headed the ball to an unmarked Martinez right outside the box, before the Argentine forward struck it into the bottom left corner of the net. Inter dominated possession in the first half, with Spezia not having any shots on target.

Calhanoglu doubled the lead in the 52nd minute after receiving the ball inside the box and calmly slotting it beyond Spezia goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski. Correa put the ball into an empty net in the 82nd minute, shortly after coming on, after Edin Dzeko’s assist from the left went past Dragowski. The win means Inter top the standings with six points from two games.
