Michael originally wrote the script for Heat in 1979, which was used for a pilot that became the 1989 television film L.A. Takedown.

Heat was based on the criminal Neil McCauley and Detective Chuck Adamson, which occurred in the 1960s.

Five years later, he turned the script into a feature film, releasing the movie on December 15, 1995.

Al and Robert made their first on-screen appearance together in Heat.

Michael previously mentioned his intention to adapt his Heat 2 novel into a sequel.

‘It’s totally planned to be a movie. Is it a modest movie? No. Is it a very expensive [televisin]series? No. It’s going to be one large movie,’ Michael told Empire in May.

It is unlikely Al will return to the sequel, he told the outlet, as well as Robert and Val.

The reason why is due to their age, with the director explaining they would be too old to portray their characters in the sequel in scenes set prior to the events of the first film, per the outlet.

Robert’s character was killed in the original film.
