Stunned Christian Vazquez traded by the Red Sox with Monday night opponents Houston Astros while in batting practice… as J.D. Martinez jokes ‘he sat in our meetings, now he’s going to catch against us!’

It started as a night like most others for Christian Vazquez. He arrived with his Red Sox team to play against the Astros in Houston and went through his paces in batting practice.
But as he was warming up, the Sox traded him… with his Monday night opponents.
Vazquez, still in his Red Sox gear and clearly stunned as he was collared for a quick television interview, had to walk around the stadium, join up with his new team and play against those he had just warmed up with.

The 31-year-old Vazquez has been with the Red Sox since he was drafted by them in 2014
‘I think so, yeah,’ he said as he was asked if he was being traded. ‘It’s a business… a business.’ He was then pulled out of the interview by a Red Sox official.
Vazquez, 31, has been with the Sox since 2014 when he was drafted and speaking Sunday, underlined his desire to stay in Boston past the trade deadline amid the scrutiny over his future.
‘If we can stay together, I think we have a great chance of reaching the playoffs,’ Vazquez said. ‘We’re still here. We control what we can control.
‘We’re here fighting together. We are family and we’re going to continue until we see what happens in these couple of days. We’re still here with this uniform and I hope we can stay here.’
J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox spoke about the switch pregame and joked Vazquez will give away all the team’s secrets.
‘I found out when I was hitting in the cage, the guys told me what happened. Crazy. Fun time to be a fan,’ he said. ‘Mixed feelings if you’re a player.
Over the weekend, Vazquez said that he hoped to stay with the Red Sox past the trade deadline
J.D. Martinez paid tribute to the departing Vazquez and joked about the unique situation
‘He has been an unbelievable player, one of my favorite teammates I have played with. We’re gonna miss him.
‘We were just talking about it – said “damn, he sat in all our meetings and he’s going over there now to catch against us”.
‘He’s going to fit in well there. They have a great team. They’re getting a great player.’
But Martinez and the Red Sox did not have to worry about Vazquez smuggling their secrets over to the Astros as he did not play during his former side’s 3-2 win.
