A British man has died and six others have been injured after the boat they were riding on smashed into rocks off the coast of Italy.

The 63-year-old, who is understood to be the owner of the vessel, was killed in the accident around 8.40pom yesterday near Porto Cervo, in Sardinia.

It is thought the vessel – carrying a total of seven people – was swerving to avoid another boat when it hit the rocks and half-sunk.

Coast guard arrived to find the Briton alive but unconscious and rushed him to hospital, but he died en route.

Two more passengers have been rushed to hospital in serious condition, La Stampa reported, while the other four were treated by medics in Porto Cervo.

The 70ft yacht was towed off rocks by coast guard vessels and impounded while an investigation is carried out.

Coast guard have also sealed off the area where the crash happened until the investigation is completed.
