Michael Schumacher's family have 'big plans' in Mallorca and could turn villa into winter home

Michael Schumacher’s family have ‘big plans’ for the Formula 1 star in Mallorca and could turn the Spanish island into their new winter home.

The racing legend has been cloaked in secrecy from the public scene since his 2013 skiing accident, being cared for by his wife Corinna mainly at their Lake Geneva home after he was placed in a medically induced coma.

In 2018, she bought a £27million mansion near Andratx from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, featuring swimming pools, a large garden, a helipad, a guest villa and unrivalled sea views.

Now the family is investing more on the Spanish island, buying a 54,315 square-metre plot of land near their current villa for £2.35million, German magazine Bunte reported.

On the site are dilapidated buildings which can be demolished, and the agent praised it as ‘an absolute rarity in the region of south-west Mallorca’.

The previous owners of the site which is planted with hundreds of almond trees were originally demanding £3million for the property.

The Schumachers intend to have a horse ranch at the new property, based on similar ones at their estates in Switzerland and Texas.

Last week, Corinna broke down in tears as she accepted an award on behalf of the seven-time world champion in Germany.

She received the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia alongside friends and family, which acknowledges Schumacher’s generosity and commitment to his native state, Germany.

It is the highest civilian honour available to those born within the region and can be awarded to anyone who has made an outstanding contribution to the world.

Those who attended the ceremony gave a standing ovation to the star, which overwhelmed Mrs Schumacher, breaking out in tears.

Ex-FIA president Jean Todt, a close friend of Schumacher, was also in attendance and said afterwards: ‘An emotional ceremony in Cologne to honour Michael Schumacher’s outstanding career and charitable streak with Corinna, Gina and Prime Minister Hendrik Wuest.

‘I met Michael 30 years ago, with Ferrari, living his passion and bringing joy to millions of us! Keep fighting.’

Todt also revealed that Schumacher still has a vested interest in F1 and watches the sport at his home.

The pair enjoyed a successful relationship at Ferrari – where Schumacher won an unprecedented five consecutive world titles between 2000 and 2004.

And providing a rare update about Schumacher – who hasn’t been seen in the public eye since his accident – Todt said he visits him and watches F1 races together.

‘I don’t miss Michael, I see him,’ the 76-year-old told German TV channel RTL. ‘Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael.

‘But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.’

Todt, who revealed in May 2021 that he visits his former racer twice a month, declared his unwavering support for ‘strong’ Schumacher.

‘I don’t leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family, we’ve had so many experiences together. The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on.

‘Sometimes success and money changes you. But Michael has never changed. He’s so strong.’
