Socceroos star Aaron Mooy to join Ange Postecoglou's premiership-winning Celtic side

Socceroos star Aaron Mooy to join Ange Postecoglou’s premiership-winning Celtic side after Aussie manager lost another gun from down under in Tom Rogic

  • Mooy has not played any club football since January 4 because of Covid
  • Ongoing lockdowns meant he was unable to return to  his Shanghai club
  • The move to Celtic will be vital for Mooy’s preparation for the FIFA World Cup
  •  He will get valuable game time under former Socceroos coach Postecoglou

Socceroo Aaron Mooy will get valuable game time ahead of the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar with reports out of the UK indicating he will re-connect with former national team coach Ange Postecoglou at Scottish champions Celtic.

The former Huddersfield and Brighton midfielder has not played any club football since January 4 after cutting ties with Chinese Super League powerhouse Shanghai because of ongoing Covid lockdowns and fears he would be unable to tour with the Socceroos.

With Australia set to play its first game of the World Cup against France on November 23, a move to Celtic would give Mooy valuable game-time at the highest level to fine-tune himself for the big stage.

The news of the deal was revealed on Twitter by football reporter Mike McGrath, who called it a ‘dream move’ for the Australian.

‘Aaron Mooy to disappoint a host of Championship clubs to secure a dream move to Celtic as a free agent,’ McGrath said.

‘Talks have progressed for the Australia midfielder to join squad of countryman Ange Postecoglou.’

Meanwhile, mystery continues to surround fellow Australian Tom Rogic, who departed Celtic at the end of last season and also withdrew from the crucial final Socceroos qualifiers for the FIFA 2022 World Cup.

There has been complete radio silence from Rogic and there have been no announcements on where he will land next, with the Aussie star reportedly looking for a new challenge after a decade at the Hoops that culminated in a premiership title.

Postecoglou recently told the Daily Record that Rogic was alright and that his next move would be announced in due course.

‘I think Tom’s fine, mate. Has anyone spoken to Tom? No one spoke to him when he was here for 10 years either, that’s Tom,’ he said.

‘I’d be more concerned if he was out there talking to people. Leave him alone, he’s fine. He’ll get his next move done and I’m sure he’s in a great place. As far as I know, and I haven’t been in contact with him, but the people I know say that he’s got no problems.’
