'Saved so many lives' Hero Ukrainian dog immortalised in mural as he dons traditional garb

Ukrainian YouTube channel, Toronto Television, posted an image of the mural, rendered on a wall of a stadium in a city in west Ukraine. They posted on Twitter: “Uzhhorod artist Kateryna Tuz created a Mural with the most famous sapper of Ukraine, the dog “Patron”, on the wall of “Avangard” stadium in Uzhgorod (West of Ukraine), the State Emergency Service reported.”

The post received an outpouring of appreciation, with one Twitter user, @MarieM16779289, writing: “That’s beautiful.

“That dog must have saved so many lives.”

This comes as Ukrainian news outlet Euromaidan Press publicises an adorable photo of the service dog in traditional Ukrainian dress.

Jack Russell terrier Patron looks into the camera, decked out in a miniature embroidered shirt, known as a vyshyvanka.

The account tweeted: “Service dog “Patron” in national Ukrainian clothes – Vyshyvanka.

“‘Patron’ works in a team of pyrotechnicians of the State Emergency Service, Chernihiv Oblast.

“On May 9, he received an award for his work from President Zelensky.”

Patron has been working as a service dog with the bomb units in Ukraine for a number of years.

“Patron accompanies them everywhere.

“He loves cheese, so our guys sometimes give him a special treat.”

Patron was also referenced on the official Facebook page of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, describing how “he helps his owner every day in the fight against the dangerous consequences of military actions”.

The post added: “The little dog, which has already become a true symbol of fighting the giant Kremlin murder machine, has travelled several hundred miles and met those who are just as desperately in need of support during this scary time”.

The page added: “The war will surely end and every boy and girl who can finally walk freely in their beloved streets should know that the enemy has left behind many insidious “gifts”.

“And we remind you: Great heroes are not necessarily big, but explosive objects are necessarily dangerous.”

The post ended on a light-hearted note, adding: “Remember! Every time you don’t follow the rules of safe behaviour with explosive objects – somewhere in Chernihiv region one Patron is upset.”
