Harry Kane fires back at question over Gareth Southgate future after England humiliation

England captain Harry Kane has fired back at a question from Channel 4 reporter Kelly Somers about the future of manager Gareth Southgate. The Three Lions were humiliated at the Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton on Tuesday night as they were thumped 4-0 by Hungary in the Nations League.

Following the match, England fans booed Southgate and his players as they left the pitch. And Somers wondered whether the Three Lions stars still believed they were heading in the right direction under the former defender.

“Those chants were aimed at the manager on the touchline,” Somers said as she began her final question of the interview. “Just two games to go until Qatar. How confident are you that under him you’re on the right path?”

Kane appeared to be put out by the reporter’s line of interrogation as he told Somers exactly what he thought of her question. “Yeah without any question,” the Tottenham striker replied. “That’s not even a question I should be answering if I’m honest.”

Hungary took a shock lead in the Black Country after 18 minutes as Roland Sallai finished well at the back post. And after England had failed to find an equaliser, the Freiburg winger doubled the visitors’ advantage with 20 minutes of the match remaining.

Zsolt Nagy then fired in from close range with 10 minutes left before England defender John Stones was sent off after a collision with Daniel Gazdag. And Gazdag dusted himself off to compound the home side’s misery with a fourth goal just before the end.

“I thought it was a disappointing night,” Kane admitted. “First half I thought we actually created enough chances to score but it’s kind of been the story of our Nations League so far this camp. We haven’t quite had the cutting edge. Then second half it’s unacceptable, once we went 2-0 down, to concede in the way we did.

“But we’ve not had a camp like it for a long, long time so it’s no time to panic. It’s time to keep our heads up, look forward to a break now and come back stronger in September.

“It’s our first big defeat in a long time. Our defence has been the structure of our success over the last four or five years. So it was a night to forget, of course, but we’ve got to take it on the chin, we’ve got to move forward. At the end of the day we’re preparing for what’s going to be a big World Cup and that’s the most important thing. So we’ll learn a lot from this camp.

“Let’s not forget where we’ve come from. Our first final in 60 years nearly, a semi-final in a World Cup compared to where we were over the last 50 years. So it’s no time to panic.

“I understand their [the fans] frustration. We want to win every time we put on an England shirt. But we’ve got to take it on the chin. It’s not going to be perfect every game. We have to understand that, the crowd have to understand that – the fans. But all we know is that we’re going to keep working to have a successful World Cup.”
