Heavily pregnant Baltimore woman is shot then gives birth to baby boy before dying of her wounds

A heavily pregnant lady and her fiancé were fatally shot in East Baltimore, with the 38-year-old woman’s baby delivered in the moments before she died.

That baby is now in critical condition according to the police, due to the emergency delivery rather than any shooting injury.

Both victims were rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the man was immediately pronounced dead.

The woman has since been identified as Angel Morgan Heather Smith. She was about seven months pregnant at the time of the killing. Her partner was identified as Yahmell Montague.

Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said the man was in the driver’s seat of his car and the woman was his passenger when another car pulled up next to them as they parked on East 23rd Street around 8pm on Thursday night.

The driver of the other car then got out and fired while someone else fired from the passenger window.

‘This was a very, very violent and brazen assault on two individuals, three individuals rather, in this block,’ Harrison said.

‘Once again, we’re standing here talking about the brazenness, the cowardice, the deliberate attempt to harm and kill individuals with gun violence.’

Authorities think there were two gunmen involved and who are still at large.

No description has yet been provided of the suspects but an investigation is ongoing.

‘We will do everything within our power to find who did this, catch them and hold them accountable,’ said Commissioner Harrison.

‘It’s a complete shock to our family,’ said Minnie, Montague’s cousin to WBAL.

‘I am extremely saddened. I am upset and I’m angered by what happened … We lost one of our family members over, most likely, something that is senseless. How can you kill somebody that’s in the process of having a baby, of raising a family?

‘We’re sick of the killing,’ Minnie said. ‘We’re sick of everyone just going around and shooting whoever the hell they want to.’

‘I’m just lost for words right now. All I can say is whoever did it, you will be found out,’ said Kelly, another of Montague’s cousin.

‘I just heard shots go off. I stepped outside and saw the impact of what happened … The young lady and the young man were both hit by gunfire … It’s unfortunate. It happens every day. So, in a way, I’m accustomed to gun violence in Baltimore, but I was particularly saddened because the young lady was pregnant,’ another resident said.

Thursday night’s shooting comes amid a particularly violent stretch in the city.

There have been 13 homicides and 27 non-fatal shootings so far this month, according to police spokesperson Chakia Fennoy.

Police reported 125 homicides so far in 2022, compared to 114 at the same point last year.

‘To be quite honest and frank, I don’t really give a s*** what the conflict was. We cannot have folks shooting at pregnant women in our city,’ Mayor Brandon Scott said.

‘A baby is being brought into the world after their mother is shot and is on life support. If that doesn’t change your mind about what is happening in your community or check the people around you, I don’t know what will.’

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police at 410-396-2100 or use Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
