Netflix’s First Trailer for ‘Resident Evil’ Takes Umbrella’s Terror to London

Netflix on Thursday released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming show inspired by Resident Evil, Capcom’s popular horror video game franchise filled with zombies, vampires and other foul creatures created accidentally, but often intentionally, by the fictional pharmaceutical company Umbrella.

The eight-episode series will follow Jade and Billie Wesker, the daughters of Albert Wesker, played by Ella Balinska and Adeline Rudolph, respectively. Those familiar with the franchise will recognize Wesker as the first main Resident Evil villain and a total pain to beat in RE5.

Netflix initially indicated the series is set in two timelines, and we now know when and where those timelines will occur. Per the trailer, the first timeline occurs in New Raccoon City, “a city where nothing wrong ever happens,” in 2022. If you’ve played the games, especially the first three that are set in the original Raccoon City, you know “Raccoon City” and the bold statement that “nothing wrong ever happens” is a major red flag.

Sure enough, the second timeline picks up in an utterly destroyed and chaotic version of London 14 years later. The London setting isn’t the first time the Resident Evil franchise has crossed over into a real world setting as previous Resident Evil movies have taken place in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and other well-known cities. The video games themselves have yet to feature a real-world setting, though the most recent game, Resident Evil Village, is appropriately inspired by Transylvania’s Peles Castle.

The Resident Evil series will air on Netflix July 14. Netflix didn’t immediately respond to a request for additional comment.
