'Jordan de Goey, he should be in jail!' Suns fans sing a cheeky chant to put off Collingwood star

‘Jordan de Goey, he should be in jail!’ Gold Coast Suns fans sing a VERY cheeky chant to put off Collingwood star as he takes a shot at goal

  • The Collingwood midfielder had previously been arrested in New York City
  • The arrest was an alleged scuffle in a nightclub stemming from stolen drinks
  • De Goey was facing criminal charges and was stood down by the Magpies
  • His charges were later downgraded, he pleaded guilty and returned to training

Die-hard Gold Coast Suns supporters did their very best to put a Collingwood star off his game at the MCG on Sunday, chanting ‘ Jordan de Goey, he should be in jail’.

De Goey’s career hung in the balance after he was charged following an alleged altercation in a Manhattan bar in New York in late 2021.

De Goey had allegedly been involved in a scuffle that broke out at Chelsea’s exclusive Dream Nightclub involving punters allegedly taking drinks from his roped-off area.

He had been charged with assault and pleaded not guilty.

Collingwood stood the star player down when he was charged. However, the charges were later downgraded to second-degree harassment, which does not carry a criminal conviction, and De Goey pleaded guilty via video link.

After a three-month hiatus from the club, De Goey resumed training in late January and has been an instrumental player in their roster ever since.

The small but dedicated group of Suns supporters weren’t about to let him off the hook, though, chanting at the  midfielder as he lined up a goal.

Collingwood had the last laugh, beating the Suns by 25 points at the MCG.

De Goey, 26, is off contract at the end of the 2022 season and is one of the hottest commodities on the free agent market.

The Magpies are feeling salary cap pressure and might struggle to retain the tattooed midfielder after already spending big to retain Brodie Grundy and defender Darcy Moore.

It is believed rival clubs – potentially even the Suns – could offer De Goey up to $1million a season to pry him away from the Magpies.
