  • Nancy Pelosi read the poem out at a lunch for lawmakers at the White House

U2’s Bono has been ridiculed for a limerick about Ukraine dubbed ‘the worst poem ever written’.

The poem was read out by Nancy Pelosi at her St Patrick’s Day lunch at the White House yesterday.

She said that Bono, who is from Dublin, had been ‘a very Irish part of our lives’.

Pelosi revealed Bono had sent her the poem that morning as she shared it with lawmakers on March 17.

It has since been torn apart on social media, with one user calling it ‘the worst poem ever written’.

Another social media user said the line ‘the psycho in this human family’ was ‘absolutely the most unhinged’.

‘Is he saying we are all one big family and Putin is no longer invited to dinner?’ she asked.

Others called for Bono for to face sanctions and wrote their own parody versions of his poem.

One joked Bono had written a poem that read: ‘The war is so sad/ It’s making me mad/ But I hope that Vlad/ Gets killed really bad.’

Meanwhile, Fox News’s Tucker Carlson said Pelosi ‘may have unveiled the most powerful weapon in her armament’ by revealing the poem.

He added that she read the poem as if she ‘had just ended the war’.

‘You and Bono. Thanks Nancy,’ he said.

Bono shared his poem online as he claimed the panned verse ‘wasn’t written to be published’ but maintained ‘the limerick is irregular and not funny at all’.

‘We stand with the people of Ukraine and their leader,’ he added.

Bono’s attempt at a heartfelt poem about alleged war criminal Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine came less than a week after Poet Laureate Simon Armitage published his take on the war.

Armitage’s poem Resistance was met with a much better reception than Bono’s limerick and referenced the moment a brave Ukrainian woman told a Russian soldier to ‘put sunflower seeds in your pockets so that they will grow on Ukrainian land after you die.’
