There is also interest from Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen in a young player with plenty of potential for development.

The Italian clubs Roma and Inter Milan have also been linked with Spence.

Now, according to Sky Sports News, German champions Bayern are expected to make an approach to Middlesbrough about a transfer in the summer.

Bayern have reportedly been scouting Spence in Forest’s most recent matches and will continue to do so as Steve Cooper’s side chase a play-off spot in the closing weeks of the season.

Spence, who is equally at home as an orthodox right-back or a wing-back, has scored twice and contributed three assists during 32 matches at the City Ground.

His performances in Forest’s defeats of Premier League clubs Arsenal and Leicester City in the FA Cup this season has boosted the interest in him.

Signing Spence would suit a new transfer model Bayern want to adopt, which would involve signing players with strong potential at a young age, developing them and selling at a large profit.

The German magazine Kicker reported last week that the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which left their 75,000-capacity Allianz Arena empty, has affected Bayern’s ability to compete on player wages with European rivals.

The 19-year-old Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, who has been linked with a move to Bayern, is cited as a good example of this proposed new strategy.
