Wordle words: The most difficult word to come up – 'Wordle crisis'

Not all Wordles are created equal. The algorithm generating a random five-letter word daily for players to guess can often catch people out with obscure words. If you’re left scratching your head at the Wordle grid, you probably aren’t alone. However, one word was so tricky it went viral on Twitter – can you remember the hardest Wordle word?

Wordle is a daily online brainteaser where players have to work out a five letter word using up to six guesses.

Players can then share their score on social media, via a clever trick that shows how many guesses you used represented by emojis.

Because everyone is guessing the same word each day, it can get competitive as people attempt to crack the puzzle in fewer goes than their friends.

There is a different five-letter word to guess each day, and keen Wordle players have noted some are harder than others.

According to the Scrabble dictionary, there are around nine thousand five-letter words in the English language, excluding proper nouns, as per Scrabble and Wordle rules.

On January 13, the word of the day was ‘FAVOR’, causing uproar amongst British gamers as the American spelling was not in everyone’s vocabulary.

However, one word was so tricky to guess, it actually started trending as so many people shared their frustration at being able to guess the word.

When KNOLL was the word of the day on January 24, so many people took to Twitter to complain that Wordle 219 (the number of that puzzle) was trending.

Many Wordle players use tactics, such as starting with words that have lots of vowels and commonly used letters, in order to increase the likelihood of guessing some letters correctly in their first go.

However, when Wordle throws a curveball with a rarer word like ‘PROXY’, the word of the day on January 18, players can be left scrambling for the right letters.

How do you play Wordle?

You can play Wordle online here.

Wordle is free to play and there’s a new puzzle every day.

The rules are very simple: you are given six chances to guess the five letter word.

When you guess a word, the letter tiles will show up in one of three colours.

If the letter tile is grey, it does not appear in the word you are guessing.

If the letter tile turns yellow, it is in the word you are trying to spell, but you’ve put it in the wrong place.

If the letter tile turns green, it appears in the word and is in the right place.

So in your next guess, you can keep your green letters where they are, rearrange your yellow ones and add some new letters to reach the solution.
