New Highway Code changes set to launch in days will 'affect every single' road user

Ultimate Driving, an online driving school specialist, claims every type of road user now has new boundaries” on the road. A spokesperson has warned the new rules will be the “largest shakeup” of the rulebook that has “ever happened”.

The updates will be introduced from Saturday in a bid to boost road safety.

The main change comes in the form of a new ‘hierarchy of road users’ rule.

This means drivers of large vehicles such as cars and vans will have more responsibility to avoid incidents with pedestrians and cyclists.

These more vulnerable road users will also be given extra priority on the road and at junctions in a blow for car owners.

A total of 33 percent said they did not realise rules were changing, while four percent had “no intention” of looking at the details.

The AA has suggested the Government was to blame for the lack of awareness as they were “far too silent” in promoting it.

Jack Cousens said: “With a week to go, too many drivers are unaware of the new rules of the road.

“While the Government formally announced these changes last summer, they have been far too silent in promoting them.

“Shockingly, one in 25 drivers say they have no intention of looking at the new rules.

“These changes affect everyone, so we encourage people to read the updated code now so we can make our roads safer.”
