Chelsea: Cesar Azpilicueta will NOT decide his future until after the international break

Cesar Azpilicueta will NOT decide his future until after the international break with Chelsea captain keen for a deal longer than a 12-month extension – as Barcelona wait in the wings with a minimum two-year contract

Cesar Azpilicueta will not make a definitive decision on his Chelsea future until he meets with the club after the international break.

Reports in Spain on Tuesday said the player had agreed to join Barcelona but the defender – who could have moved to the Camp Nou this month but refused to entertain the idea of leaving Chelsea mid-season – wants to speak to the club again before finalising his plans.

Barcelona still look favourites to land him because of the London club’s policy of only offering players over 31 one-year renewals.

The Catalan club will give the Spanish international a two-year contract with the option of a third year if he joins this summer.

But Azpilicueta has strong ties with Chelsea, the club he joined in 2012 from Marseille.

He has three children all born in England and his wife and family are settled in London.

It’s why he ruled out the possibility of joining at the start of the year when Xavi personally requested the club bring him in to bolster Barcelona’s leaky defence.

And it’s why, despite reports in Spain, he is not willing to make a definitive decision before a meeting likely to take place next month.
