UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has revealed that he wants to go into boxing after retaining his UFC world heavyweight title with a victory over Ciryl Gane at the Honda Centre in Anaheim.

Ngannou has made no secret of his desire to make the switch to boxing one day, and Tyson Fury’s fearsome reputation in the ring and Connor McGregor’s defeat by Floyd Mayweather have proved no deterrent.

The 35-year-old has previously revealed that he would take to the octagon with WBC champion Fury having challenged him to a contest wearing MMA’s lighter gloves.

Ngannou told Joe Rogan after his title fight: ‘As I always say, boxing is always in the back of my pocket.

‘It’s something that I must do before the end of my career!

‘And right now, I’m really looking towards any opportunity to get that because it’s not like I had a lifetime here.

‘So I better start thinking about it.’

Ngannou is understood to have one fight left on his contract due to a clause that extends the deal by winning a championship bout, putting both him and the UFC in an awkward position.

It will be fascinating to see whether the organisation come to an agreement with the champion or decide to strip him of the title in punishment.

UFC president Dana White skipped the post-fight press conference following Francis Ngannou’s win over Ciryl Gane at UFC 270.
