'Pulse of 1,5°C is weak' – Still more work to do on commitments, says COP26 president

Countries on the front lines of the climate crisis believe keeping warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels is essential for their survival. Mr Sharma said: “Despite all the commitments that were made, the pulse of 1.5C is weak. “Therefore we now have to work together with our colleagues in Egypt who hold the COP27 presidency to ensure that there is a delivery plan so that all these commitments that have been made do actually come to fruition.”

Speaking to the House of Lords environment and climate change committee yesterday, the MP for ReadingWest said staff working full-time on COP26 in the Government will fall by around 36 percent.

The “COP unit” headcount has dropped from 220 last year to around 145. Separately, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has today launched a consultation to help new developments protect wildlife more effectively.

Environment minister Rebecca Pow said: “Our commitment to protecting and enhancing our natural world can and must go hand in hand with our ambition to build more high quality homes.” The Daily Express Green Britain Needs You campaign has called for everyone to do their bit to safeguard wildlife and biodiversity.
