Jamie Redknapp questions why Manchester United didn't go for Antonio Conte

‘They need someone like him… they’re miles off it’: Jamie Redknapp questions why Manchester United didn’t go for Antonio Conte as he says interim boss Ralf Rangnick ‘WON’T get another two years’ based on current performances

Jamie Redknapp has questioned why Manchester United didn’t look to appoint Antonio Conte when he was available.

The now Tottenham boss had been linked with the role at Old Trafford towards the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s helm at the club.

While United gave Solskjaer more time in an attempt to turn his fortunes around, Tottenham sacked Nuno Espirito Santo and immediately went in for the former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss.

United later sacked Solskjaer and instead went for Ralf Rangnick, who suffered his first defeat as interim boss against Wolves on Monday night.

Speaking after United’s 1-0 defeat at home, Redknapp told Sky Sports: ‘Why they didn’t get Antonio Conte when they could have done. They need someone like him.

‘If you’re only there until the end of the season, you’re in there naked. The way he’s going now he won’t get another two years.

‘If he wants to be there long-term he’s got a lot of decisions to make. There are a lot of players that he’s trying to shoehorn into the team.

‘The ball should have got man of the match for Man United today because it had to do an incredible job to stay out there because everyone was given it away. When you look at it right now, they’re miles off it.’

Wolves outclassed the Red Devils on Monday night, securing all three points thanks Joao Moutinho’s 82nd minute goal.

Though the loss to Wolves was United’s first under Rangnick, there has been little improvement in terms of performance since he replaced Solskjaer at the helm of the club.

Redknapp’s co-pundit Paul Ince, when asked if there had been progress, replied: ‘If I’m being totally honest, then no.

‘It reminds me of when Ole first took over at Manchester United and he had an easy fixture list – Cardiff, teams like that – and it came off the back of a (Jose) Mourinho team where the players didn’t really like Mourinho and the atmosphere was hostile.

‘Ole came in, had a great fixture list to go into, changed the system, changed certain things, made it a happy camp and they started winning games.

‘I think we all got hoodwinked into the fact that this was the way forward and we were making progression. I get that same feeling now.’

United are two points behind Conte’s Spurs side – who are two points outside of the top four with two games in hand.

Tottenham are yet to have suffered a defeat in the Premier League since Conte’s appointment at the beginning of November.
