Arsenal's Albert Stuivenberg moans about VAR controversy and wants Gabriel to be 'smarter'

Arsenal assistant manager Albert Stuivenberg says the Gunners should have been given a penalty against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon and admits defender Gabriel should have been ‘smarter’ before he was sent off by referee Stuart Attwell. Arsenal conceded a stoppage time goal at the end of the match as they were defeated 2-1 by the runaway Premier League leaders at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had Stuivenberg in the dugout for the visit of the Citizens as manager Mikel Arteta was forced to miss the match after contracting COVID-19.

And the hosts were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the early stages of the match after City goalkeeper Ederson appeared to bring down Martin Odegaard.

Attwell waved away the Arsenal protests and opted not to check VAR, much to the chagrin of Stuivenberg.

“I think it is a penalty but I am looking for consistency,” Stuivenberg hissed after the match.

“We have VAR in place so why not check yourself as a referee? That did not happen so it is disappointing.”
