Michael Mosley: Add Mediterranean & ‘gut friendly’ foods to diet to lose weight– meal plan

Dr Mosley recommended looking at his website, The Fast 800, to find hundreds of nutritious and tasty recipes.

But he also shared what he himself eats in a day.

The nutrition expert changed his diet, adding plenty of Mediterranean ingredients to his routine, when he was diagnosed with type two diabetes eight years ago.

Dr Mosley explained: “I was not particularly overweight, weighing about 189lb (86kg) and I didn’t look particularly fat, but that was because a lot of the fat I was carrying was internal.

“I went for a special MRI scan and I found out that I had lots of fat clogging up my internal organs.

“Rather than start on medication I decided to try a combination of intermittent fasting and a Mediterranean diet and successfully managed to reverse my diabetes. As a result, I stick to this daily diet now.”

For breakfast, Dr Mosley usually opts for a mushroom omelette with kimchi-style sauerkraut, which he said is “great for the gut”.

For lunch, the nutrition expert said he might have “a turmeric chicken salad or a chickpea tagine”.

Looking at the recipes on The Fast 800 website, Dr Mosley’s favourite again consists of turmeric.

He said: “My favourite dish from The Fast 800 is the turmeric roasted cauliflower with dhal.

“It is filling, moderately low carb and a great source of plant protein and gut-friendly fibre.

“We also eat a lot of fermented food like sauerkraut and kimchi.

“I have got into the habit of adding sauerkraut to almost all meals, including my eggs in the morning, salmon at lunch and then also on most evening meals too.”

According to Healthline, sauerkraut improves digestion, boosts the immune system, reduces stress, and may lead to weight loss – making it the perfect ingredient to add to your dishes in the new year.
