A Very British Scandal: What happened to the Duchess of Argyll after the divorce?

A Very British Scandal made its debut on BBC One after Christmas and the three-part drama is now coming to an end. The TV series depicts the turbulent marriage between Margaret Campbell (played by Claire Foy) and her husband, the Duke of Argyll (Paul Bettany). Express.co.uk has all you need to know about what happened to the Duchess after the divorce.

What happened to the Duchess of Argyll after the divorce?

The Duchess of Argyll became the first woman in Britain to be publicly shamed in the media.

She is known for being promiscuous and her unpredictable nature left her husband on edge.

Concerned his wife was cheating, he went about finding evidence and came across some incriminating images.

The infamous Polaroid photos show the Duchess posing naked with another unidentifiable man.

Following the discovery, divorce proceedings began with Judge Lord Wheatley leading the case.

After all of the evidence was stacked against the Duchess in the series, Lord Wheatley concluded: “Concerning the Duchess, I consider her to be a highly-sexed woman.

“Who had ceased to be satisfied with normal relations and had started to indulge in disgusting sexual activities to gratify a debased sexual appetite.

“Evidence was supplied in the form of diaries, letters and Polaroid photographs.

“The man or men depicted cannot be identified as the angle of the images obscure the head.”

He concluded: “There is enough in her own few admissions and proven facts to establish that she was a completely promiscuous woman.”

The Duchess said: “I simply don’t know. I know I loved him… what he felt like I don’t know.”

She later wrote a memoir titled Forget Not, which was published in 1975.

Her extravagantly luxurious lifestyle came to an end after the scandal and she ended up in debt.

Her children later moved her into a nursing home in Pimlico, where she died in 1993.

The Duchess died after suffering a bad fall at the home and she was buried next to her first husband, Charles Sweeny.

She had three children, including Frances, the Duchess of Rutland.

As for her former husband, The Duke of Argyll married Mathilda Coster Mortimer Heller in 1963.

Ten years later he died after a stroke, aged 69.

Regarding the unidentified men in the photo, it was believed two men had been the Duchess’s lovers.

There was plenty of speculation around who the men were but the Duchess continued to keep their identities a secret.

A Very British Scandal concludes tonight on BBC One at 9pm.
